Special Notice: This session is open only to educators participating in the Regional Education Consortium. School Division ID required at check in. Pre-registration required.
Would you “rather be fishing”? Make fishes and fishing your secret weapon for presenting STEM subjects, addressing standards of learning, and satisfying requirements to offer Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences for your students. VIMS educators and scientists will share content, lessons and skills for studying fish the way scientists do. Instructors will review fish form and adaptations to coastal habitats, introduce the kinds of research questions fisheries scientists ask, and discuss scientific field investigations (MWEEs) your students can conduct along stream, estuary or ocean shores. VIMS educators will share classroom-tested lessons and activities that cover SOLs on topics like adaptations, food web interactions, experimental design, collecting and graphing data. You get to practice basic fishing methods like shoreline seining, and a hook & line fishing clinic is included.
Bring clothes for both classroom (layers and covered shoes) and outdoor settings (sun protection). A towel and change of clothes are recommended (getting wet is a possibility). Pack a lunch, bring a water bottle or fluids, or be prepared to leave campus to purchase lunch locally.
