Special Notice: This session is open only to educators participating in the Regional Education Consortium. School Division ID required at check in. Pre-registration required.
One of the greatest challenges of middle school mathematics is the development of proportional reasoning. Understanding ratios and their multiplicative structure is the foundation to build a bridge to higher mathematics. In order to help students reason flexibly, teachers must have a broad and deep knowledge themselves. This session provides a progression of activities to bring a visual sense to the relationship of ratio quantities through the use of manipulatives, pictures, and ratio tables. These connections help guide students to “see the math” as we develop this critical area of understanding. This session is valuable for all teachers grades 5-8 who want to lay the groundwork for their students’ future success in advanced mathematics.
