Fractions play an integral role in students’ future success in mathematics. No area of K-8 math is more challenging (for students as well as teachers) yet so fundamentally rich for conceptual development and productive mathematical reasoning. This professional development session provides a progression of ideas to encourage flexible thinking, discovery of patterns, and making connections among fraction models of area, length, and set. It is our desire to foster an instructional approach that develops number sense as opposed to procedural skill building so our students can enjoy the beauty of math.
