In 2013, through Virginia Code 22,1-79.4, Virginia became the first state in the nation to require a threat assessment team from kindergarten through college. Since then, great strides have taken place to facilitate threat assessment, recognize aberrant behavior, and to assess and intervene with individuals whose behavior may pose a threat to the safety of school staff, students, or themselves. Using the DCJS model to evaluate and respond to threats made by individuals, this session will provide an overview of the threat assessment process and the rationale behind this effective approach. Participants will also engage in a hands-on, tabletop exercise that walks them through a threat assessment case study.
